Matt Richter

My Story

Born and raised in McAllen, Texas, Matt is a third-generation Rio Grande Valley resident. The son of a lifetime educator and John Deere tractor salesman, Matt comes from humble roots. He grew up working on a family friend’s farm and has driven just about everything with two or more wheels or tracks: from motorcycles and pickups to combines, tractors, spray rigs, 18-wheelers, road graders, front-end loaders, and bulldozers. Matt has not operated an excavator yet, but he is dying to get his hands on one. With a background like that, it should come as no surprise that Matt heads the firm’s commercial motor vehicle section. Equally comfortable in a suit sitting inside the courtroom, or Wrangler blue jeans and boots while working at a big rig inspection, Matt’s unique background helps him to understand the needs of the commercial carriers he represents and their dedicated truck drivers.

Matt earned his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University. A true Fightin’ Texas Aggie, he returned and graduated from Texas A&M University School of Law, where he was the first appointed member of the school’s Student Bar Association. Once off the farm, Matt began a long-term internship with John Skaggs, a well-respected defense attorney in McAllen, Texas. Under John’s supervision, Matt can brag that he took his first trucking-defense deposition at the age of nineteen! After eventually partnering with John Skaggs, Matt continued to hone his legal skills both inside and outside the courtroom, always focusing on trucking/commercial motor vehicle defense.

Outside the courtroom, Matt is active with his local Boy Scout troop; having earned his Eagle Scout rank, he is eager to help others to earn it. In his spare time, Matt is an avid local sportsman, and he helps host multiple sportsman events each month. Matt has a passion for engines and vehicles, and especially loves tinkering with his 2004 diesel Dodge Ram (his dream vehicle), which he modified himself to make over 1000 horsepower. Matt spends a majority of his free time with his best friend, Shadow, a black labrador who lives for chasing critters and belly rubs. Matt also frequents the farm upon which he grew up. During weekends in the summer, he can oftentimes be found operating a combine, grain buggy, or even the farm’s tractor-trailer to help with harvest.

Matt brings with him not only a tireless work ethic, but he also brings a notable prowess in the courtroom and a sense of practicality when it comes to handling trucking claims, which he is very proud of. Matt prides himself in his attention to detail and his ability to think outside of the box. When it comes to hiring a lawyer that not only understands the complexities of defending truckers and trucking companies on the southern border of Texas, but also understands the fundamentals of these cases, including mechanics and the trucking industry itself, Matt is your guy.
